Lesson 9 of 18
In Progress

Method: Scarf

What

The origin of the prayer shawl is found in the Old Testament books of Numbers and Deuteronomy. Moses wrote that God told him to instruct the men to make tassels for their clothes to remember God’s commands (Numbers 15:38–40) and to place the tassels on the four corners of their cloak (Deuteronomy 22:12).

Some modern Jewish people wear small prayer shawls, or scarves, to adhere to this instruction, while some Orthodox Jewish men cover their heads with a full shawl while they pray. Some prayer shawls contain eight threads with five knots each on one of the corners, bringing the total to 613 and corresponding to the number of commandments in the Torah—the first five books of the Old Testament.

How

Place your oil in your hands, breathe it in then hold the scarf in your hands as you pray promises of God’s word over your family, work, or whatever it may be. Write names and dates on the scarf as a reminder of where God has taken you on your prayer journey.

When

Set a prayer timer for 2-5 minutes to get started. Holding the scarf, go through the names one by one ; with your fingertips on a name, pray the promises of God over their life and stay there until the Lord prompts you to move on. You may not get through every name on the scarf, and that is okay. It serves as a sensory reminder of the person by name and in need as you pray and seek to feel their need and surrender it to God.

Why

This is a reminder of where you’ve been, God’s faithfulness and a sensory experience to your prayer life to keep your hands busy and your focus contained.
